How To Buy The Ideal Mattress

Selecting a mattress is not as simple as walking into the local furniture store and grabbing the first twin-size bed you see. In fact, choosing the right mattress is as important as picking out a new sofa because of how integral sleep is to your overall health and well-being. Before you head out to a local store, read this guide to learn helpful tips and tricks on how to shop for the right mattress for your needs and budget.

Comfort

A good way to tell whether a mattress will be comfortable is by sitting on it in the store while wearing the same clothes and shoes that you’d wear to bed. The pressure-relieving qualities of memory foam mattresses can be a plus if you tend to toss and turn all night or endure body aches and pains. If you prefer a firm surface, though, consider buying a mattress with fewer springs or one made from latex, coir, or polyester materials instead.

Durability

Don’t overlook this quality when shopping for a mattress — especially if you have kids who might jump on it or pets that could scratch at or chew it. Make sure the mattress has a durable cover that resists tears and stains, as well as reinforced edges that won’t wear out quickly.

Firmness

Firmness varies from person to person, but there are some general guidelines you can follow. If you like a firm mattress, choose one with a firmness rating of about 8-9 out of 10 (10 being the most firm). If you like something softer, pick a mattress with more give at around 6-7 out of 10 (this is still relatively firm). The thickness of your mattress has an impact on its firmness as well. Keep in mind that if you’re buying online, the mattress might feel different once you get it home.

Ask for A Trial

Test mattresses out before you buy them. You may want to take a nap on one in-store before you get it delivered or have it set up in your home. You need to know how it feels. You could also bring some bedding from home to see how it will fit with your existing setup.

Size Matters

Think about the size mattress you want and whether or not your bedroom can fit it. Are there any doorways that will be obstructed if you get a king-size bed? Buy a mattress that doesn’t overpower your space.
